Balloon Battle | Frappe Snowland | Mushroom Hills | Star Cup | Menus | Missions | Decals
7 New videos of MKDS have recently hit the web. Anyone who is Spanish has no problem with them, but many of us can’t speak Spanish. That is why I am giving you a complete breakdown these 7 videos. I will be providing translations where possible with the help of Babel Fish. If you are having trouble downloading the videos from here I also recomend dsnews and dsmagazine.
MarioKartDS_BatallaGlobosNDS_DSM
Start - This is clearly battle mode. There are 2 modes available, the standard balloon made and the shine-hunting mode. At the character select screen we can see the standard 8 characters. What with Luigi being selected for a moment it appears that selection is made with the Dpad, but just touching will probabley work too.
0:05 – Notice that the stat window is missing. This possibly means that all characters have the same stats in battle mode. There are now 4 options to be made, reading fro top to bottom I believe they are:
Kart CPU – Difficulty
Circuitos – Translated it means circuits and Elegir means To Choose (other options could be random)
Se Gana – One Gains??? And Sin Reglas means without rules??? This is unclear. If I had to guess on this setting it means you have to win one game to win overall. Changing this to a number will mean how many you have to win to win.
Equipos – Equipment. I wuld guess this means items but they are in the game and it is set at no. Perhaps it is something we don’t know about yet.
0:10 – OK, the tracks. There are 6 available but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more. The reason I say this is that it has 5 new tracks, and one old one. But we have no confirmation of this and it is pure speculation. Anyway, the arena names are:
Nintendo DS – Nintendo DS. Similar to the Gamecube track from MKDD, except it’s on a DS that has it’s top screen at a tilt and no walls.
Casa Crepuscular – Crepuscular House. Can’t get anything from the name. Perhaps Crepuscular is the name of something from a Nintendo, but in Spanish. The picture suggests an external arena in front of a warehouse.
Costa Palma – I’m not sure but I believe that this is based on an area from Super Mario Sunshine. But I never played that game so it’s just a guess.
Dulce Tarta – Sweet Cake. Just a small circular arena on a cake.
Ciudad Bloque – City Block. Block Fort, Block Town and now City Block (maybe Block City). To be honest this place doesn’t look too bad and could be one of the best in the game. But that’s only from the picture.
Plaza Tuberias – Pipe Plaza. From MKDD. Go to our MKDD section to find out more on this track.
0:21 – The battle itself isn’t much and very short. After Mario falls off he is hit by DK which appears to knock him out instantly. And I suppose to save time you are not forced to watch the rest of the battle and Luigi is declared the winner. If anyone else has thoughts on what happens then please post your opinions in the forum.
MarioKartDS_CircuitoNevado_DSM
Nevado means snowed so this is transalated to Snow Circuit. But it is actually Frappe Snowland from MK64. There is very little to mention about this track but there are a few things to note. Firstly, the track is smaller, which is also what happened to Moo Moo Farm. We can expect this to happen in other tracks too. Also there are fewer snowmen on the track, probabley for the same reasons as the smaller track. But there is one thing to note.
0:20 & 0:25 – In previous games, if you got a Boo and used it it’ll just vanish from your item box and your stolen item will appear. Now however it has a proper animation, flying off the screen and then returning a few seconds later carrying your items. One can also assume that it will appear on the screen of the victim when it takes them. Might this appearance of the Boo allow players to fend them off somehow???
MarioKartDS_ColinasChampinon_DSM
Mushroom Hills. A new track, very nice. I won’t talk about the track specifically but I will point out intresting events.
At several points during this race you can see evidence of slip-streaming (espically around Toad just after the start. The fact they are now showing this so clearly proves it will be an essential tactic in the game.
0:49 – Blooper. The new item appears.
1:05 – Look at Luigi, he’s all black. Since this is just after Yoshi uses Blooper it’s probably a way to tell if the character is being affected by it.
MarioKartDS_CopaEstrella_DSM
Glass Stars??? Since it shows you the tracks in the star cup I assume that that is what the title means. The 4 tracks are:
DK Alpino – DK Alpine 0:05 to 0:25 – The DK track for this game (which means DK Mountain may not be included since it is quite similar). A snow based level high up on cliffs and includes the snowmen from Frappe Snowland
Reloj Tictac – Tick Tock Clock 0:25 to 0:44 – They have haven’t they, a track based on Tick Tock Clock from Super Mario 64 (DS). It is a lot more colourful than it’s platform version, but all the moving parts and arrow hands prove it.
Circuito Mario – Mario Circuit 0:44 to 0:54 – Mario Circuit, what else do you expect??? Set in the lush green outdoors with the castle adorning the track side (possible place for award ceremony).
Fortaleza Aerea – Aerial Strength 0:54 to End – I doubt Aerial Strength will be it’s English name, since this is clearly based on the ship levels from Super Mario Bros 3 (and may mean Bower’s Castle will not appear). Also at 1:05 it shows the effect of a Blooper on it’s victim.
MarioKartDS_Menu_DSM
The menus. Simple. But this is the best vid of the lot.
0:13 – The Main Menu, the 5 options are
Un jugador – Single Player
Multijugador – Multi-player
Wi-Fi – Wi-Fi
Records – Records
Opotones??? – Options
The control again seems like they are using a D-Pad, but just touching may work too.
0:18 – Records. The table at the top is your total wins and loses in Races, Battles and Online play. Amigos is obviously friends and the message says that he doesn’t have any L. The other two options are Grad Prix and Time Trials.
0:26 – Options. The top one is clearly Configuration. The other to are Change and Erase Data. We later learn that Cambiar is the decal mode. In Configuration the Sound modes are Envolvente (Surround), Estereo (Stereo) and Auriculares (Headphones).
Buscar Amigos is to look for friends.
0:42 – Next up is Wi-Fi which is very complicated so please excuse me if I make any mistakes. I don’t know what Desafio means but it’s probabley something simple like play. Clave de Amigo translates to Key of friend, so that’s probabley where you can add to your friends list manually. The translation of the message is unclear but I believe it means that to connect to Wi-Fi requires something… I’m guessing the CWF in that statement is very important which what makes it hard to translate and understand. Siguiente means continue.
0:47 – Again this message is unclear but I guess it is asking if you want to connect to Wi-Fi with the Nintendo DS. They select No probably because the Wi-FI isn’t available yet.
0:53 – Into the configuration. Again CWF appears and I don’t know what the means but I can tell you about the other bits here.
Toca una de las opciones – Touch one of the options.
Ajustes de las conexiones Wi-Fi – Adjust the Wi-Fi connection
Opciones – Options
0:55 – Options menu. Again, without knowing what CWF means I can’t give much context to these.
Datos de la consola – Console Data
Borrar configuracion de cwf – Erase CWF configuration
Transferir configuracion de cwf – Transfer CWF configuration
1:00 – Into the Adjust Wi-Fi connection menu now.
Puedes configurar hasta tres conexions inalámbricas o bien usar un Conector USB Wi-Fi de Nintendo - You can form up to three wireless connections or use a Connector USB Wi-Fi de Nintendo – Now this is very interesting. This is pure guess work but it appears that if you use the Nintendo USB stick it is easy, just plug and play. But should you use any other form of Wi-Fi connection you have to register it on your DS. Still working from guess word it also means that if you want to use any of those free hotspots around the world, you will have to set it up at each individual one (up to 3 of course). If I am right it’s going to be one big pain in the backside for playing out and about.
The rest of this page is of little importance. But if your interested Ninguna means none or blank.
1:14 – Back at the main menu now are user selects single player and the 5 main options are:
Grand Prix
Time Trials
Versus
Battle
Missions
Obviously the most interesting are Versus, Battle & Missions. Versus and Battle never before accessible in 1-player mode and very welcomed to be here. And missions, a new and exciting feature of the game.
1:16 – I am so glad that mission mode was selected. Any, by looking at this you can see 6 difficulties and plenty of room for more. Since 4, 5 & 6 are blocked out they may not be accessible till 1, 2 & 3 are completed.
1:19 – Level 1. I will hopefully be able to translate all the missions that are here.
1-1 – Drive through 5 tyres (it says doors but they mean tyres) in order
1-2 – Collect 15 coins
1-3 – Destroy 10 objects/boxes
1-4 – I believe you have to hit 5 Cheap Cheap while using a star
1-5 – Drive through 6 tyres in order
1-6 – It mentions something about salt, but I believe you have to drive around the Luigi Mansion course in reverse.
1-7 – Collect 20 coins
1-8 – It gives 4 sudden accelerations in curves in 1 return (Very unclear, any guesses?)
Boss (Del Jefe translates to the head) – Text translation unclear but I guess it’s a race against the boss (in this case a Bully from SM64). Although after doing Level 2 you may have to actually fight him.
1:25 – Level 2.
2-1 – Something about 10 wooden draws
2-2 – Collect 10 coins
2-4 – Destroy 5 objects
2-6 – Use Bob-ombs to destroy 5 Pokeys (unclear if you use 1 Bob-omb, or many).
2-7 – Drive through 10 tyres in order
Boss – Strike the eye of Tutanmanon with 3 shells. By Tutanmanon I believe they mean the Ancient Hands from Shifting Sand Land in SM64(DS).
1:38 – Enters versus mode. The character layout very important here cause even if they stay in a 3x5 grid there is room for another 7 characters. Anyway, as we can tell versus mode is a race against 7 other CPU controlled racers. Good if you want to practice a track in proper race conditions, but without entering a Grand Prix.
1:41 – Grad Prix mode. From the current layout of the difficulties it doesn’t look like there is room for a Mirror Mode, but they may be able to squeeze it in somehow (if they have one).
1:45 – Luigi is selected. Previously it was believed that you would get karts and anyone can race in them if they are of the right weight, but now we know this is not true. Each of the racer do have multiple karts (2 at the moment, maybe more to come) but only they can race in them. For Luigi we have a Hoover (real name unclear) and the Turbo Luigi from MKDD (modified for 1). Now then, the 6 stats, my god that is a lot, proving this is now a real technical game.
Speed
Acceleration
Weight
Handling
Skid
Objects
The first 4 are obvious, but what about the other 2??? Well skid may be how well you can mini-boost or perhaps when you slipstream behind other players. Objects is very interesting as now what kart you are in determines how good the items you get are. Marvelous.
1:50 – The cups, this is one of the best bits of this video (and it’s been a great one so far). Confirmation of the tracks that will be in the mushroom, flower, shell and banana cup. Well here you go:
Mushroom Cup
Figure Eight Circuit
Yoshi falls
Cheep Cheep Beach
Luigi’s Mansion
Flower Cup
Desert Sun-sun (maybe Sunny Desert)
Delfino City (Delfino Plazza more likely)
Waluigi Pinball
Mushroom Hills
Shell Cup
Mario Circuit 1
Moo-Moo Farm
Peach Circuit
Luigi Circuit
Banana Cup
Donut Plains (1 or 2)
Frappe Snowland
Bowser’s Castle 2
Baby Park
That is all from this great video.
MarioKartDS_Misiones_DSM
Shows you 2 of the missions, simple (1-5 & 1-2). But there is something. In non of the mission statements does it mention the track or character you’ll use. Now it is most likely always the same track per mission, but it is possible to have a different character each time. But then again it’s just as likely to be the same character for each mission.
0:25 – Only translation needed is when the first mission is done.
Choose another mission
Try again
Quit
MarioKartDS_Vinilos_DSM
Last one now. With Vinilos I got vinyls, but this vid is about the decals for your kart. After going into the option menu they select Cambiar (change).
0:04 – Apodo means nickname and escudo is shield.
0:07 – This menu is unclear. Modificar is modify but I’m not sure what the other option here is. It might be a place where the decals are saved.
0:09 – The bulk of the video takes place here and it is all self-explanatory. To the right you have your palette with 15 colours (don’t know what that in the bottom left is, more colours, zoom). The centre is your canvas to draw on and underneath them is Select & Start (Camera (shown later) and exit). And to the left is your tools, 3 paintbrush sizes, 3 rubber sizes, fill colour and a pipette. I don’t know about the circle underneath them, perhaps it’s for drawing circles and other shapes, maybe it’s full of pre-drawn images to add to your shield. The top screen features a character and kart (the 1/16 suggests you can change it for any of the others available). As you draw the decal not only appears in a small box in the middle left but on the kart too.
1:26 – They push start and menu appears.
Continue
Save & Quit
Quit without saving
They continue and access the camera
1:30 – A little tour around Mario’s kart.
L/R – Choose kart
X – Zoom In
B – Zoom Out
D-Pad – Rotate
After looking around the kart they exit the camera, save & quite the modifier and the video ends.
So what have we learnt here today. How the Blooper Item works? How decals are made? What the Wi-Fi set-up looks like? That their are at least 54 missions? The track names for 5 of the cups? Some new battle mode info? You could answer yes to all of these, but what is most important is that we have learnt that translating 7 Spanish videos into English with no sound can kill ya.
I hope you enjoyed reading that. I’ve gone through 6 pages in Word to bring you this so I hope you enjoy as much as I have writing it (I really have). Also mega thanks to dsmagazine for providing these videos and dsnews for informing us. I wish to remind you though that these videos are in spanish and my translation with babel fish will not be perfect, so their may be some errors.
